King of the West 410s at MRP Sat
Wiesz, Sills will challenge top guns

By Bob Burbach
Marysville CA - April 15, 2012 --- California’s premiere 410 winged sprint car series, the King of the West sprint cars will invade Paul and Kathy Hawes’ sparkling Marysville Raceway Park. Round 2 of the series is this Saturday night. The top guns in 410 winged sprint car racing on the west coast will be making their annual stop at the much improved MRP clay. The state’s top 410 sprint car wheel-men will be in competition with the Cancen Oil KWS Series presented by Goodyear. Included in the field will be defending series champion Tim Kaeding in the famous Roth #83, two-time titlist Jonathan Allard, former champ Jason Statler, former MRP Civil War main event winner Andy Gregg, former KWS Speedweek champion Bobby McMahan, young star Rico Abreu and Australian native Peter Murphy will be at MRP to give the event an international flavor. A 24-car 30 lap feature will top off the evening’s festivities. A traditional program of qualifying, heat races, a fast dash and a last chance B main will be offered in preliminary action.

50 time winner and 3 time champion at Colby Wiesz will try to grab a victory away from the touring pros. 20 years after Wiesz become the youngest driver ever to win a KWS event (at Grass Valley in ’92 beating KWS Super Star Brent Kaeding to the line) he will team up with owner Jim Richardson in the 410 Black Star #8. Wiesz and Richardson told this observer their intentions after Wiesz’s amazing run to his 50th 360 victory at MRP. Wiesz started 9th and rushed to the victory from there.

A legend will also be on hand on Saturday night when three-time USAC National Silver Crown champion and National Sprint Car Hall of Fame member Jimmy Sills makes his return to 410 Winged Sprint Car competition. It’s been a number of years since he has climbed into a 900 horsepower winged sprint car for competitive action in California. At the Marysville KWS event, Sills will sit behind the wheel of the DES Racing No. 6up machine.

In his storied career, Sills has tallied a number of major accomplishments including his three USAC National Silver Crown titles. The “Professor” who prides himself as being a hired driver only has also scored wins at the Mini Gold Cup, the Oval Nationals, the Jayhawk Nationals and a number of other big national events. Sills has claimed wins in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. All in all the Elverta, California driver has been one of the most respected dirt track racers to ever come out of the state. His resume’ however shows some 30 pavement wins as well.

KWS Operations Manager George Hague recalled, “I remember Jimmy being almost untouchable at Baylands Raceway when I was an announcer there, he practically owned the place and watching him get around that track was a thing of beauty. What he accomplished in the Silver Crown Series was also something special and we hope all the fans will come out to see him at Marysville.” Many of Sill’s Outlaw and California 410 successes came in the famous and locally owned Lovell Bros #71 out of Yuba City and in Clyde Lamar's equally familiar #3c.

The many time World of Outlaws feature event winner is also owner and operator of the Jimmy Sills School of Open Wheel Racing at Marysville Raceway Park and has trained many of today’s young drivers including NASCAR star Kasey Kahne. Fellow National Sprint Car Hall of Famer Brent Kaeding will also be in action at Marysville Raceway Park Saturday. The driver of the familiar Al’s Roofing Supply No. 69 mount has raced to victories in his career at the MRP clay and will be looking to add another.

Last year’s KWS winner at Marysville Raceway Park, Willie Croft, will be at MRP as well. Last season’s win for “Double Down” was a popular one among the racing community and came at the track where Croft began his sprint car career and took home the honors in MRP’s 3rd edition of the Mel Hall Memorial race in 2001.

Tim Maclaughlin, local star Joel Giusti and MRP’s own Blonde Bombshell Misty Castleberry will saddle up in the companion Pro 4 winged sprint car program Saturday night. All 3 drivers have shown they know the way to victory lane in this open wheel entry level 4 cylinder sprint car division. The Pro 4s have new rules and a positive new attitude and have had some remarkably close racing recently. Giusti and Castleberry are graduates of MRP’s own Mini Stock class. Maclaughli is a 4 time champion in the rejuvenated class. It will be their 1st race of the new season.

The pit gate opens at 3pm. The grandstands open at 5. Qualifying will go off at 6:30 with racing to follow qualifying.

IMPORTANT: 2012 minor releases must be signed by parents for all minors entering the pits.
