Winged Sprint Cars at Riebes’ KIDZ NITE Sat.
Race against childhood cancer & King of Ca. Dwarf Open also on card.

By Bob Burbach
Marysville CA - June 4, 2012 --- Saturday night is one of Paul and Kathy Hawes’ signature events on the Super Season of 2012 schedule. It’s KIDZ NITE. This year KIDZ NITE is being sponsored by the great folks at Riebes Auto Parts. The scary fast and dangerous MRP Winged 360 Sprint Cars will be the headliners as every MRP Winged Sprint Car Champion since 1998 will be represented at this event. There will be lots of kid friendly activities at the raceway including face painting, balloon animals and hats, and some pretty cool giveaways. Kids 12 and under are free.

Former MRP Champions Jeremy Burt, Mike Monahan, 3-time champs Brent Dothage and Colby Wiesz, MRP’s own “5-time” Korey Lovell and defending champion Billy Wallace have all told this observer that they will be at the race this week. Once again it looks like another MRP Race of Champions in the volatile, alcohol guzzling 800hp Winged Sprinters.

The long awaited return of the MRP Super Stocks will also be on this fabulous program of racing. The thundering, fender-rubbing, paint-trading warriors haven’t turned a lap in anger at MRP since May 5th and are more than ready to rumble. Defending champion of the division Cory Hall will lead a fine field of racers into Saturday’s KIDZ NITE program. The 1st annual Jim Munroe Memorial Race for Dwarf Cars will also be offered. It is a dwarf car King of California Series tour stop. 3-time Champ Tim Maclaughlin will lead another Pro 4 Sprint Car assault on the MRP clay as well in this sterling four division presentation.

This event will also address the need for a cure for childhood cancer. Marysville Raceway Park will have a special guest in the house, Hayden Elliott. Elliott is a 5th grader at Loma Rica Elementary School. Hayden was struck by a rare form of childhood cancer that prompted doctors to amputate a leg. The courageous youngster has fought hard, but the expenses are mounting as the family struggles with paying for his treatments and necessary prosthetics. During a break in the action all 5 Winged Sprint Car Champions in attendance plus champions and drivers from all the divisions in the house will make their way through the grandstand, helmets in hand looking to help this situation for Hayden.

Taking a page from the book of courage, 2004 MRP Winged Sprint Car Champion and 4-time Montana State Champion Mike Monahan will be back in the saddle again for his 4th race in the last 2 weeks, both here and elsewhere. On April 3rd Monahan had all 4 fingers of his right hand severed. They were re-attached in a remarkable operation. The buzz was that Monahan may never race again. Two weeks ago, in only two months time, Monahan strapped back into his 800hp sprint car; the familiar #49. Last Saturday night Monahan was among the quickest qualifiers and charged to an amazing 6th place finish in only his 3rd race since being injured. This is truly an amazing story. Monahan is an MRP fan favorite with his outrageous hammer-down style. In the past Monahan has recovered from terrible crashes and severe burns in sprint cars and fought his way back. Watch for Monahan to improve as he gets stronger in the weeks to come.

As a bonus, 3 time Marysville Raceway Park sprint car champ Colby Wiesz will not only wheel his MRP Winged Sprint Car but he will also be saddling up for the first time in a dwarf car at MRP. This, for the 1st annual Jim Munroe Memorial Race. The winner of 50 sprint car features at MRP has taken to the swift little cars and will be a solid fan favorite at the track where he has also grabbed the champion’s crown on 3 occasions in sprint cars.

The fan friendly Nor Cal Dwarf Cars will host the 1st annual Jim Munroe Memorial Race Saturday as the dwarf cars make their 3rd appearance of the season at MRP. This event is part of the new dwarf car King of California Series. The three major clubs in California will be represented. It is a 50 point minimum race for each association participant. This incentive plus the biggest purse payout in recent years is likely to prompt a big turnout of cars. It is truly encouraging to see a class of cars try to get together to stimulate car counts rather than remain fragmented, dragging car counts down. In a recent conversation with dwarf car guru Frank Munroe (whose father this race is named for) told this observer that he estimated some 40 “serious” race cars will be headed for MRP Saturday. Dynamite does come in small packages.

Speaking of the MRP Winged Sprint Cars, defending champion Billy Wallace will be trying to get his 3rd feature event championship victory in a row. In a class where consecutive victories are unheard of, especially at MRP, Wallace has been on a roll. His bad-fast, Bully Dog Special will have a host of challengers Saturday night. Arch-rival and one of the quickest guys ever at MRP, Jeremy Burt will be out to avenge their last encounter two weeks ago and shake off the effects of his bone jarring flip last week.

While Wiesz will pull double duty Saturday, his quest to win #51 in his sprint car will be of primary importance. Monahan will be itching to show up in victory lane as will Lovell who has not visited victory lane yet this season.

It will be a thriller!! So grab your friends, bring the kids and come on over for Marysville Raceway Park’s always spectacular KIDZ NITE.

This Winged Sprint Car show will be a Contingency Connection event. Feature event bonus awards will be available to the winner with Contingency Connection sponsorship decals displayed by the winning driver. The bonuses will be awarded at the track this season. Sponsorship decals are available at MRP. Winning racers in the Contingency Connection will average $1500 in Contingency Connection bonuses weekly this year.

Pit gate for racers opens at 3PM. Grandstands open at 5PM. Qualifying at 6:30. Racing after qualifying.

Don’t forget to monitor our facebook page during the week; we’d love to hear from you. Updates are constantly being forwarded to the page on race night. Every Thursday night at 8PM MRP gives away 2 free tickets to the following week’s events. So, pop on to facebook (marysvilleracewaypark.com) and grab a couple of freebees on Thursday.
