Tight point races spice Dilly Bar Nite
3-way knot in Sprinters & 3-way fight in Supers

By Bob Burbach
Marysville CA - June 27, 2012 --- This Saturday is Dilly Bar Nite at Paul and Kathy Hawes’ Marysville Raceway Park. Twice a year the great folks at Dairy Queen of Yuba City offer everyone in the house a free DQ Dilly Bar. Saturday night is Dilly Bar Nite #1. There is a rip-roaring good battle in the championship for 2 of the 4 divisions scheduled. The MRP Winged Sprint Cars have a 3-way tie for the championship point lead and 50 time feature event winner and 3 time champ Colby Wiesz will be back home to try and spoil everyone’s night. Defending Champion of the division Billy Wallace is tied at the top with 2007 Champion Jeremy Burt and former MRP Wingless Sprint Car Champion Cort Dozier. All have accumulated 284 points going into Saturday’s event.

Last Saturday night’s feature event winner Brent Dothage is back in the hunt after missing a feature event earlier in the season. He’s in 5th. MRP’s own “5-Time” Korey Lovell finds himself in 4th place just 10 points behind the knotted trio at the top. Dothage is only 11 points behind the leader. So, 5 former MRP champion drivers are in the hunt for the title.

Then, for good measure throw in 2004 Champion Mike Monahan who is on a tear lately after his remarkable recovery from injuries that would have sidelined lesser competitors. Monahan scored a remarkable feature event triumph just 3 short weeks ago and was a force to be reckoned with last Saturday night. He finished 3rd. Monahan’s surge in popularity is certainly justified as one of the sport’s great human interest stories is played out the MRP clay this season. With Monahan and Wiesz in the house, 7 former sprint car champions will be vying for a trip to victory lane.

Be sure and be there Saturday to see how all of this shakes out when they start throwin’ ‘em in sideways at 100mph. Wicked-fast, the alcohol guzzling MRP Sprint Cars will be on the edge all evening long.

The Winged 360 Sprint Car show this Saturday will be a Contingency Connection event. Feature event bonus awards will be available to the winner with Contingency Connection sponsorship decals displayed by the winning driver. The bonuses will be awarded at the track. Winning racers in the Contingency Connection average some $1500 in Contingency Connection bonuses weekly this year.

The MRP Super Stocks are having a shootout at the top as well. As their season starts to get legs, former champ Phillip Shelby has shot out into the lead over this season’s early favorite, Brent Hall. Hall suffered a devastating mechanical problem that left the door open for Shelby and others to rush into.

Shelby holds a slim 6 point lead over Hall, but dark horse favorite Ray Trimble has parlayed a couple of outstanding nights into a tie with Hall at the runner-up spot. Hall has won this year. Shelby has not.

The thing is, Ryan McDaniel keeps showing up and stirring the pot. McDaniel, who won last week, has been a factor in every fendered race he’s competed in this year at MRP. He has a 1st and 2nd in the Super Stock ranks and when the Late Models cruise into town, he’s been the class of the field. Petaluma traveler Mitch Machado has made his mark and also has found victory lane this season. McDaniel and Machado have not joined the association for championship points.

This season is turning into a thriller with a couple of ringers thrown in each week to keep things interesting. A full field of fender rippin’ dirt track Super Stock racing is on tap for Saturday. Here’s a tip. Keep an eye on James Castleberry for the rest of the season. He kind of sneaked into the limelight and slipped into 4th position in the points. He’s fast and he’s due.

In the MRP Hobby Stocks, Jeremy Hammons brings in a big point lead in the standings over veteran Jim Waller. Hammons has been dominant this season getting 2nd last week after newcomer Eddie Hammett beat Hammons to victory lane. Saturday night should be a gas as the slam-bang hobby stock season moves on.

The Pro 4 Sprint Cars will return Saturday with last year’s champion and current point leader Tim Maclaughlin leading the way. MRP Mini Stock champ Misty Castleberry will park her Mini and saddle up in her #95 Pro 4. Castleberry will be looking for her 2nd trip to victory lane this season.

Pit gate for racers opens at 3PM. Grandstands open at 5PM. Qualifying at 6:30. Racing after qualifying.
