MRP Fendered Finals Fri. and Sat. as 17th Dwarf Nationals comes to town.
By Bob Burbach
Marysville CA - September 26, 2012 --- This Saturday night Paul and Kathy Hawes’ Marysville Raceway Park will host the 17th annual West Coast Dwarf Car Nationals. The 2-day extravaganza will be joined on Friday night by the MRP Super Stocks in their final run for points in 2012. Then, on Saturday night the MRP Mini Stocks will run their last race of the season.

Yuba City’s Brent Hall is 49 points ahead of his closest rival for the title in the MRP Super Stock chase, James Castleberry. There are a maximum of 50 points available to the winner of the main event. In order for first place in the title chase to go Castleberry’s way, he absolutely must win. But in order for him to secure the title Hall cannot start the feature. If Hall takes the green flag on Saturday night for the MRP Super Stock main event, he will lock up his 1st championship in MRP’s 44th year of continuous operation. The Friday MRP Super Stock program promises to be filled with northern California’s finest stock car stars.

The division that fostered the late Billy Knoop’s spectacular stock car racing career will, for the 1st time since his passing, honor the fallen champ. This will be the last opportunity for the division to run in 2012 in advance of the Billy Knoop Memorial Race now scheduled for Saturday night October 13th. More on that great race later.

On Saturday night during the final night of the Dwarf Car Nationals, the MRP Mini Stocks will return for their final point show of the year. While Misty Castleberry has a lock on the title, a number of other positions in the points will be decided on Saturday in the Mini Stock closer. This will be the last shot at Castleberry this season. All the top stars in the class will be looking to knock her off her pearch. It should be a gas!

The West Coast Dwarf Car Nationals is expected to feature top drivers from 7 western states competing in this division’s premier event. It is the longest running National event in the class. Race director Ray Blackshere told this observer that the pre-entries for this event have reached 45.

This annual gathering is likely to attract another 20 entrants or more for the two day shootout on the hooked up MRP clay. Promoter Hawes indicated that his track preparation would keep the raceway just that way…hooked up. With that in mind the west’s best Dwarf Car chauffeurs will have to be pitching it in hard and riding the cushion to go to the front in this one.

Favorites in the dwarf car field would include Mike “Spanky” Grenert, the rocket fast Ryan Winter, ultra brave high rider Shawn Jones and “Hollywood” Kevin Bender. “Flyin’” Brian Quilty has won this event and, at MRP, he has been a force to be reckoned with. Adding a little local flavor to the event, former sprint car star Mark Hill will crowd into the cockpit of Neil Stinson’s potent hot rod for this event. Hill, who has had significant successes at MRP should be one to watch in his initial outing in a dwarf car. Also, from the MRP Mini Stock ranks comes Jeremy Blackshere. Blackshere (the 2003 MRP Mini Stock champ) is also one of the guys who can get up on the wheel go forward.

Gates open at 5pm both days with the 1st race going off after hot laps. The 1st Dwarf Car events will start at about 6PM. The Stock Car and Mini Stock preliminary events will likely be presented at about 7.30.
