Local entries spice Super Stock ranks
Bartlett returns for final season
By Bob Burbach
Marysville CA - April 2, 2014... The MRP Super Stock ranks are loaded with local Yuba-Sutter entries. But, the champion is Ray Trimble is from Auburn and he is bringing a 2-car team this season. A controversial local racing legend has tossed his hat in the ring as have four other former champions. The enormously popular winged sprint cars may be the headliners Saturday, but the MRP Super Stock class this season will be a rip roarin’ fender rubbing war with roots firmly established locally.

Before sprint cars showed up at MRP in 1991 as a championship division, Super Stocks ruled the clay at MRP. This could be the best season ever in the class. “I sure think this class will be great this year,” quipped promoter Paul Hawes. It’s no wonder.

Multi-time champion of the division Jerry Bartlett of Yuba City will return to where it all began for the 30 year veteran of the racing wars. Bartlett has let it be known, in no uncertain terms, that this will be his last season. He has also issued a challenge to all comers that he is going to be this year’s Super Stock champion at MRP. That seems to have sparked a renewed interest in returning to MRP for four additional former champions, and other stars, to see that Bartlett does not win the title in his final year. It is a story worth examining.

Former Super Stock titlist Phillip Shelby was among the first to respond as the young charger will look for another title aboard his familiar #86. Shelby was very quick in practice sessions held recently at the newly refurbished racing plant.

Also making appearances and also turning in noteworthy laps were former champions Brent and Cory Hall. This Yuba City brother act is a formidable team and has been very successful in recent years. Though last year they competed in fewer races and did not seek the title. This year will likely be different.

There’s a Marysville brother act just as quick. Marysville’s Cortney Dozier was clearly the dominant presence at MRP in this division last season. Dozier won when he didn’t break. But, he broke once too often leaving the door open for Trimble, who had his career-best season. Trimble’s hammer-down, cushion riding style, was a treat to watch. Cortney Dozier’s brother Rick will be in an identically prepared entry. Cort is a former champion of the MRP Late Model Stock Car class. The Dozier racing team is just another added positive in what is forming up to be Marysville Raceway Park ’s greatest season. Other local MRP Super Stock entries include James Castleberry who led the point standings early last season and the fast rising young star Sean Hulsey who is on the verge of a break-through season.

It appears that Bartlett's brash challenge has created a hornets nest of worthy competitors of championship caliber. It all starts Saturday.

The mighty MRP Winged Sprint Cars, the MRP Super Stocks, the MRP Wingless Sprint Cars, the MRP Mini Stocks and the Pro-4 Sprint Cars will all compete this Saturday night in an action packed 5 division show.

As we know more, you’ll know more. See you Saturday at MRP!

Gates open at 5. Hot laps at 6:00. Qualifying follows hot lap and racing is scheduled immediately after qualifying at about 6:30.
