Burt battles to sprint car victory!
Sherman, Hall, Hammett & Olschowka also win.
By Bob Burbach
Marysville CA - April 13, 2014... Grass Valley’s Jeremy Burt grabbed the winner’s trophy in the MRP Winged Sprint Car class with a wire to wire win that was a lot more intense than it sounds and Yuba City’s Cory Hall was unstoppable in the MRP Super Stock closer. Sacramento ’s Tim Sherman won the featured event in the MRP Wingless Sprint Car class and Olivehurst’s Eddie Hammett pulled off another victory in the 2014 opener for the MRP Hobby Stocks. Local driver Buddy Olschowka won the added Nor Cal Dwarf Car main event. Promoters Paul and Kathy Hawes’ Marysville Raceway Park honored the lives of two former drivers, Duke Griego and Harold Hudgins with traditional memorial checkered flag laps for both.

The MRP Winged Sprint Car feature had a sterling field of competitors 21 strong but got off to a rocky start; to say the least. Pole sitter, former champion Mike Monahan was lined up next to last week’s winner Colby Wiesz. When the green flag flew Monahan’s car jumped sideways right in front of the entire field. Wiesz tagged Monahan but accelerated away. But the track was blocked and six additional cars piled into the wreck. 5 other drivers glanced off each other while avoiding the big crash and sustained damage that hampered them for the remainder of the event. There were no injuries in the melee.

When the new green flew Burt rocketed to a big lead during the first five laps of the contest. Wiesz stayed second as Chico ’s John Michael Bunch fought his way into third. A couple of yellow flags worked to Burt’s advantage, keeping him from encountering lapped traffic. When Burt was in clean air he motored away from the competition.

But with seven circuits remaining Burt was trapped in heavy lapped traffic and Wiesz pounced, with Bunch in his wake. The last few laps were a tornado of 100 mph sprint car action. Wiesz and Bunch were all over Burt with two to go. Burt was lapping cars and holding off his challengers all in one fluid motion. At the white flag Wiesz was nearly along side and Bunch was on the high side trying to pass them both.

At the flag Burt had his victory as Wiesz and Bunch finished under a blanket for second and third respectively. Marysville’s Shain Matthews and Cort Dozier rounded out the top five.

Wiesz, Bunch and Marysville’s Jeremy Hawes won the heat races.

Former series champion Cory Hall, of Yuba City controlled the MRP Super Stock feature from start to finish. When Hall was hampered by lapped traffic Cort Dozier (doing double duty) closed in, but no one was going to pass Hall on this night.

The race for second was a race long slug fest between Cort Dozier, James Castleberry, Phillip Shelby and Rick Dozier. While the race was not caution free there were few incidents and only four cars failed to finish. Cort Dozier was the runner up with Shelby, Rick Dozier and Castleberry in tow at the flag. Yuba City ’s Jerry Bartlett and Rick Dozier won the heat races.

The MRP Wingless Sprint Car feature was all Sherman ’s. After a brief battle with Marysville’s Josh Vieira, Sherman took off and was clearly the quickest in the field. Vieira and Sherman were the heat race winners.

Former champion Brett Youngman of Grass Valley was third and Misty Castleberry came across in fifth.

The MRP Hobby Stock opener was all Eddie Hammett. Hammett easily outdistanced the field early in the event, and then had a flat tire. His crew changed the tire and Hammett sliced his way back into the lead as the checkered flag flew. Hammett also won the heat race.

Marysville driver Buddy Olschowka who has driven everything from sprint cars to hobby stocks fit himself into a Dwarf Car Saturday and ran away with the show. Olschowka kept Nor Cal Dwarf Car champions Kevin Bender of Rocklin and Mike Grenert of Vacaville behind him for the entire distance. It was Olschowka’s first visit to victory lane in feature event competition at MRP. Grenert and Nor Cal champion Ryan Winter won the heat races. Next Saturday night the mighty MRP Winged Sprint Cars will return with the MRP Super Stocks and Mini Stocks. The Pro 4 Sprinters will return for their second attack on the MRP clay. All of this will be offered on Saturday night at Yuba Sutter’s only professional sporting event stadium, Marysville Raceway Park .

Gates open at 5 with racing at 7:00PM.
