Wings return to MRP
Sprints and Supers head
Marysville CA -
May 7, 2014... After a two week hiatus with
interruptions from Mother Nature, Paul and Kathy
Hawes’ Marysville Raceway Park will flip the lights
back on and host an action packed four division show
this Saturday night for “Mom’s Night Out”. The MRP
Winged Sprint Cars will headline the program in their
4th appearance of the season. For stock car fans the
MRP Super Stocks and MRP Mini Stocks will compete in
some fender crunching championship point racing
competition as well. The Pro 4 Sprint Cars will also
be on the card.
In the MRP Winged Sprint Car
division, Paradise driver John-Michael Bunch has
really been on the gas and has a 1st, 2nd and a 3rd in
the season’s first three events. Bunch has been on the
pedal hard in his 800 horsepower winged sprint car.
Bunch is the championship point leader.
2007 MRP Champ, Grass Valley ’s Jeremy Burt, won on
week two and was 3rd on opening night. Burt was 6th
last time out, but roared to that position after
starting 13th. Burt, too, has been on the pedal.
Local sprint car racers Brandon and Cort Dozier
have been raising some eyebrows. Cort is a very close
4th in championship points with consistent runs.
Brandon has been spectacular while rim-riding the MRP
clay. Brandon ’s daring hammer-down style has been
almost frightening to watch.
Husband and wife
racers Raquel and Heath Hall of Oroville will be
trying again for consistent finishes. Heath Hall’s
dramatic drive last time out shows that this fine
driver just may be a factor in the championship hunt.
Heath Hall is a former winner of the Rich Dozier
Among others, another former
champion, Mike Monahan out of Sparks , Nevada has had
a couple of difficult nights in the early season.
Monahan is among the most aggressive of the
participants and will look to improve his position
Saturday night. 5 time champ Korey Lovell of Yuba City
had a rare mechanical failure and did not start the
feature event last time out. But twin brother Kevin
Lovell also from Yuba City jousted with Heath Hall all
race long for a well-deserved 2nd behind winner Bunch.
3-time and defending champion Billy Wallace from
Grass Valley has had a tough early season again this
year with lackluster finishes and a retirement last
time out. Wallace is mired in 7th place in the point
standings. But, Wallace was in just about the same
place last year at this time and roared back to take
Woodland’s Peter Paulson and rookie
contender, Marysville’s own Jeremy Hawes, will be
back. Hawes has been impressive in his first three
starts in the rocket-fast winged sprint cars. It
almost appears that it hasn’t been all that big a
learning curve for the wingless sprint car veteran.
Last time out he was mixing it up with some of the
sport’s biggest stars. An unfortunate retirement in a
first lap accident on night two chopped off valuable
points in the championship battle for Hawes, but it’s
a long season. Hawes looks like he might be the first
rookie ever to have a shot at the title in a sport
that requires focus, experience and stamina to be
crowned champion. Paulson continues to rip around the
raceway with blinding-fast speeds, but has been bogged
down in some racer’s bad luck of his own. Look for
Paulson and Hawes to charge on Saturday.
MRP Super Stocks are loaded with local talent
including Yuba City championship contenders Phillip
Shelby and point leader Corey Hall. Hall has won
convincingly while Shelby ’s car lit up the night in
smoke and flames last time the pair raced. It turns
out that the damage was minor and Shelby will be back
on Saturday. Hall has been nearly unbeatable in the
rough and tumble series thus far. He has won two in a
row. Winged and wild, the Super Stocks have put on
some fan friendly fender crunching events this season.
Marysville’s Cort and Rick Dozier and a very
quick James Castleberry, among others, will be looking
for their first trips to victory lane. Journeyman
veteran Cort Dozier will do double duty in his MRP
Winged Sprint Car and his Super Stock.
Mini Stocks will be led by championship point leader,
Yuba City ’s Jimmy Ford. Former champion Misty
Castleberry and early season point leader James Foster
of Linda will also be in the field. Defending champion
Shaun Merritt of Marysville is anxious to get going
again after a sluggish start in the title chase. Make
no mistake; Merritt is one they will all have to beat.
Misty Castleberry will also be doing double duty.
She will be in her MRP Mini Stock and will be looking
to keep her win streak alive in the Pro 4 Sprint Car
Series. It’s pretty simple; she has won every race
this year. 4-time Champ Tim Maclaughlin of Colusa will
try to knock her off the perch.
Grab mom and
bring her out for an exciting, well designed, tightly
run program that will get everybody home in time for a
good night’s rest and a great Mother’s Day on Sunday.
Gates open at 5pm with racing starting at 6:30pm
